Design University - Embellishment Techniques for Distinctive Garments
A class in good design principles.
What's the secret behind good design? Good design is something you can learn. Gain confidence in your own creative ability.
Theory and Practice
Theory: What makes a beautiful and exciting design? A balanced, interesting piece? Start with an informative session on the elements of design and how they are used to create innovative works. Next, explore what works in a series of exercises exploring the concepts of good design and discover your own style of composition.
Practice: Now that you know, how do you do it? In the afternoon, you'll expand your personal interpretation of good design while working with a variety of embellishment media. Learn shortcuts to dyeing, stenciling, adding bling, utilizing metallic threads, stamping and more. After exploring your own version of good design, you can finish by creating your own rayon scarf of a length of fabric to use in a garment. Bella, bella, bella!

You Can Do That with An Embroidery Machine??

Did you know you could construct wallets completely on your embroidery machine? Wine Glass Coasters? Glasses Cases? Doll clothes?  Have you seen wing needle embroidery done on an embroidery machine?  Did you know you could embroider on wire screening, umbrellas, wood?  Explore a wide variety of projects constructed on the embroidery machine and learn which stabilizers and threads make these projects possible. Explore how to get the best results on every possible surface from silk charmeuse to wood and enjoy the process.  Audiences around the country have enjoyed Bobbi’s voluminous number of ideas and her sense of humor for years, and you can, too.
In this class you’ll make 2 projects, a CD case and a cell phone case. You’ll also stitch out samples of interesting ways to use your embroidery machine; cutwork, and wing needle, and a paper piecing in the embroidery hoop. (We usually finish off of these in a class but its possible we might not get to the last one or two).  While your machine is stitching, Bobbi will show you a variety of samples of ways to push your embroidery machine to the limit.

“You helped me be comfortable
expressing myelf. Who knew that
learning could be so much fun.”
Jen Dulyani
Design University Student

I remember the exact moment I first found your website and it did it to me then, big time. it was a profound turning point in my sewing life. It made me come alive again. I was so impressed with your designs being such that they could become part of a garment, and not just something you put ON the garment. I remember thinking, finally, designs can be translated into mature creations.. And then when I attended your class - I learned even more how to actually enhance my clothing.

Dear Bobbi:

I took your class at the Novi show and was very inspired. You just did a wonderful job there and I hope you return.

I have avoided doing too much embroidering on clothes because I just did not want that single design "out there." I am now looking at my embroidery collection of designs in an entirely different way. I also have many of the patterns you showcased (independent companies) and see that all I need is the time and inspiration!

Thanks again--in fact, many thanks.

Marian Faupel

Hi Bobbi,
I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you this weekend. I attended several of your talks. Your easy manner and humor made the "education" a lot of fun.

Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Your designs are lovely.

Hi Bobbi,

I met you in Boca and you are absolutely delightful. I purchased several of your design sets and stitched out Summer Boxes yesterday and just had to tell
you how pleased I was. You did a beautiful job digitizing and it made it such a pleasure to sew them out. Hoping to see you again at another retreat.
